Central Area Collaborative is proud to welcome and introduce Steve Banks Jr., our new Executive Director. Steve recently sat down for a short interview to share more about his professional background and vision for the organization. You can read the full Q&A below:
Q: What inspired you to dedicate your leadership to empowering the Central Area community, and how do you see your role as Executive Director shaping its future?
A: My journey has always been rooted in a desire to make a meaningful impact beyond the sports and business worlds. Growing up in the Central District of Seattle, I’ve seen firsthand the strength and resilience of this community, as well as the challenges it faces. I’m inspired to leverage my experience in leadership, education, and youth development to empower residents, foster economic growth, and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the area. As Executive Director, I see my role as a catalyst—building strategic initiatives that create opportunities, support local businesses, and inspire the next generation to dream big while honoring their roots.
Q: Can you share a specific experience or project that exemplifies your commitment to fostering economic growth, cultural preservation, and community development in your career?
A: One project that embodies my commitment is the recent addition of the BSV Legacy Experience, which provides financial literacy education to young athletes. This initiative is especially important to me as I have two young boys. By equipping youth with essential financial skills, we’re helping them build a legacy of smart decision-making, entrepreneurship, and cultural pride. Additionally, my involvement with Baseball Beyond Borders demonstrates my dedication to engaging inner-city youth through sports, helping develop their passions and skills for a brighter future.
Q: What vision do you have for the Central Area Collaborative over the next five years, and how do you plan to engage community members and stakeholders in achieving that vision?
A: My vision for the Central District is a vibrant, thriving community where economic vitality, cultural heritage, and youth empowerment are at the forefront. Over the next five years, I see the Central Area becoming a model of community-driven growth—supporting local businesses, celebrating our cultural assets, and providing financial education and opportunities for our families. To achieve this, I plan to actively engage residents, local organizations, and stakeholders through listening sessions, partnerships, and collaborative initiatives that reflect our community’s needs and aspirations. Building trust and fostering inclusive dialogue will be key to creating sustainable, positive change.
